Founded in 1984, Omitron, Inc. is an aerospace engineering, mission operations, and IT services firm headquartered in Beltsville, MD. Omitron is a small business with a strong focus on hands-on customer support and applied engineering. We support NASA Earth and Space Science missions, NOAA Environmental satellite programs, Air Force Space Command, and National Security space programs. Omitron provides technical expertise in ground systems, flight operations, flight dynamics, trajectory design and analysis, space surveillance, IT security, and conjunction assessment risk analysis.
Omitron is headquartered in Beltsville, Maryland with a regional office in Colorado Springs, Colorado and field sites in State College, PA, Chantilly, VA, Las Cruces, NM, Vandenberg AFB, and San Diego, CA.
Through the late 1960’s and 1970’s, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC or ‘Goddard’) was making a transition from being primarily responsible for the operation of communications networks supporting NASA’s manned-space missions to developing technology for space-based scientific research. With this focus, GSFC was responsible for a few large complex scientific missions that were the precursors to the Great Observatories, as well as less complex smaller missions. GSFC began leading the way in advancements of spacecraft design that would make them less expensive to build and operate. These advancements included modular spacecraft design as well as on-orbit servicing. In supporting these developments, GSFC maintained its own scientific research staff and in-house capability for producing instrumentation for earth, space science satellites, and planetary missions. Its project management role for major scientific missions was enhanced by the increased skill set developed from in-house spacecraft design and development.
In 1984, Bruce Larsen, Fred Hawkins, and Preston Burch established Omitron as a small business offering cost effective services for development of ground systems and for the support of flight operations. The three founders had a broad base of experience and expertise encompassing scientific research, space instrumentation development, spacecraft design and flight operations. Despite 32 years of growth and expansion into many areas of the space industry, Omitron continues to provide this support to GSFC.
